Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition, HBCAC, is pleased to inform you this afternoon,Tuesday February 12,2013, the Interagency Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Coordinating Committee (IBCERCC) released a report on breast cancer and the environment prioritizing prevention. This report is available at http://www.niehs.nih.gov/about/boards/ibcercc/
|Summary of Findings|
The IBCERCC was established by Congress in 2008 to review the current state of science and investments by federal agencies and other organizations, and made recommendations to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius for actions to better understand how breast cancer risk is affected by changing environmental circumstances. The committee consists of federal agency representatives, non-federal scientists and physicians and advocates.
As an IBCERCC member who has served and contributed to this report, I feel that the recommendations provide us with new and innovative approaches on how we address environmental exposures and breast cancer risk. And while this report clearly outlines bold new ideas, I believe it also calls us to action - to support new innovative approaches in research; talk with your physicians about preventative measures that keep us well; work with your community to collectively share your health concerns with your elected officials; nurture and encourage our children to become the next generation of scientists; embrace precaution and prevention of disease and envision a world without breast cancer.
